Ferritic Stainless Steel

Low carbon stainless steels with a chromium content between 16 and 20 percent are called ferritic. It is worth noting that they do not undergo any home transformation as a result of temperature changes due to the compositions they contain, nor will they harden with some light processes. In addition, these stainless are magnetic. These steels, whose mechanical processing properties are very similar to low carbon steels, can also be easily welded. However, since they are very high chromium steels, some normalizing processes should be performed after welding to prevent grain growth and embrittlement in the welding area. Thus, it will be much better to give some flexibility.

What is Ferritic Stainless?

Ferritic stainless steels have a cubic crystal structure at room temperature and high temperatures, just like the iron element. For this reason, they cannot transform, and the fact that the situations are in this way causes the inability to perform any mechanical operation. Their usage areas vary depending on their content and depending on the low chromium content, there may be changes in the areas where they are used. Low chromium ferritic stainless steels are mostly used in the automotive industry, exhaust systems. Medium level ones are frequently used in household appliances.

Where it is used

High chromium ferritic stainless steels are also used in sectors that require high corrosion and oxidation resistance. They are seen as advantageous especially because they provide resistance to oxidation and corrosion.

On the other hand, the material is also frequently used in the kitchen, one of the most demanding sectors today. Ferritic stainless steels can be used to make kitchen utensils. It is also possible to state that this material is frequently used in decorative applications. These materials may vary depending on the durability of the products. Since it does not have a high level of durability as in other types of stainless steel, it will be possible to use it in sectors that are sufficient in this field. This brings us the concept of decorative items. While durability is a little more in the background in decorative items, the visuality and low cost of materials come to the fore more. Ferritic stainless steels, which are considered among the steel types suitable for this, stand out a little more than others and are more preferred by people. Because it is not possible to take shape, it should be stated that it will be used in applications for this purpose.
